WHY NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR LASER HAIR REMOVAL

How many ladies use the winter months as a time to take a break from shaving? Now you have an extra incentive to keep those gams covered in the winter — now is the perfect time for laser hair removal! Laser hair removal takes time and works with the growth cycle of the hair, which means that you will see some growth between treatments. If you’re aiming for that flawless bikini line or for hitting the beach without your razor this summer, give yourself plenty of time by beginning laser hair removal now.

What Do I Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal?

As you plan for your silky smooth summer legs, you need to understand several important factors in laser hair removal. One reason to perform this treatment in the chillier months is because laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the hair follicle to destroy the hair root. If your skin is tanned, the treatment will not be as effective. You should avoid sun exposure one week prior to your treatment and at least one week after in order to reduce the risk of burn or discoloration of the skin due to skin sensitivity during this period. If you do go out in the sun, use a minimum of SPF 30 on areas that are being treated and cover yourself with a hat or garment.

You should also consider that certain medications will increase your skin’s sensitivity to light. These medications are called “photosensitive,” and can include antibiotics. Talk with your doctor about whether to begin or postpone treatment while taking these medications. You may also need to stop using skin care products with retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids which can increase sun sensitivity during the treatment process.

How Often Will I Need Treatment?

Because everyone’s hair and treatment needs are different, the number of treatments will differ for each person and may vary from six to twelve. You will want to plan a treatment schedule with Love Your Body Medical Spa that works for your needs. A treatment schedule will depend on which area of the body you are treating and is based on the growth cycle of the hair. When treating the face, you can allow for 4-5 weeks between treatments as the hair grows more quickly. Under the arms and at the bikini line, you will need to allow 6-7 weeks, and other areas of the body require 8-10 weeks. Beginning early is key to completing this process in time for summer.

What Will Happen after Treatment?

Directly following treatment, you may notice skin redness or swelling for a few hours. You may ice the area, or your Love Your Body Medical Spa clinician may treat the area with a steroidal cream. Hair may shed from the skin as days go by, and hair that was not in the growing phase of the cycle may appear and will need to be treated. Again, be careful not to expose your skin to the sun too soon without protection. While you’re between treatments, do not wax, thin or pluck your hair.

Is Laser Hair Removal Treatment for Me?

The lovely staff at Love Your Body Medical Spa can help you decide if laser hair removal is the answer to your hair removal needs. Because laser hair removal works by targeting pigment in the follicle, darker skin tones and lighter hair will take longer to treat and may require a certain type of laser to be most effective. At Love Your Body Medical Spa, we want you to be 100% satisfied with the results of your treatment, so be sure to discuss your needs fully with the staff before deciding upon laser hair removal. Contact Love Your Body Medical Spa today to see if laser hair removal is right for you.
