Getting Rid of Your Underarm Hair for Good

Getting Rid of Your Underarm Hair for Good

With work and social obligations and out-of-control chores and to-do lists, constantly grooming your pesky underarm hair is almost too much to ask.

We can take it off your plate.

Here, Dr. Divinia Averilla, our expert at Love Your Body Medical Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada, takes a closer look at your most frustrating body hair problem and shows you how laser hair removal gets rid of it for good.

Understanding your underarm hair

Your body hair undergoes many changes throughout your lifetime. You’re born with lanugo hair, which eventually turns into vellus hair, better known as “peach fuzz.”

Around age 10-12 for females and 11-14 for males, puberty kicks in. This is when hormones go into overdrive, and your body starts to change dramatically.

It’s also when the pituitary gland — a bean-shaped gland at the base of your brain responsible for growth and development — triggers the release of sex hormones called androgens.

Androgens spur yet another transformation in your body hair, turning vellus hairs into terminal hairs. This means those soft, short, thin hairs become darker, thicker, and stronger. You can find terminal hairs in areas such as your face, pubic area, and your underarms.

Why you should consider removing underarm hair

Underarm hair comes with a few inherent benefits. For example, it can reduce friction in the area where the arm and shoulder come together, and it even traps pheromones.

But the advantages of removing your underarm hair can’t be ignored. In addition to softer, smoother skin that you feel comfortable showing off, you may also notice that you sweat less and have less body odor after getting rid of your hair.

Bar none, the best way to guarantee flawless underarms is with laser hair removal treatments.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal involves delivering short pulses of high-intensity light into your hair follicles. Hair follicles are the anchors for each individual hair. This is where the hair gets its nutrients and accesses blood vessels.

That’s why we send light energy into the follicles — it’s the best place to destroy current hair and prevent the growth of new hair.

We customize the settings of your treatments to account for the thickness and color of your hair, ensure a comfortable treatment session, and prevent damage to the surrounding skin.

You can also receive laser hair removal treatments for pesky hairs on your bikini line, arms, legs, lip, chin, and eyebrows.

What you can expect

During your appointment, you lie comfortably on a treatment table. We provide light-blocking glasses to protect your eyes as well. If necessary, we trim down your hair to prepare it for treatment.

Once Dr. Averilla begins, you may feel a mild warming or snapping sensation. Many of our patients equate it to a rubber band snapped on your skin. Small areas like your underarms take only 10 minutes — so you can squeeze a treatment in over your lunch break.

You can return to your daily routine right after your treatment, but you may need to apply some ice or take ibuprofen to manage any mild irritation. Because of Dr. Averilla’s expertise and our ability to directly target your hair, you shouldn’t have any skin damage.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend anywhere from 3-7 sessions to see permanent results, though you should notice finer, thinner hair regrowth after your first treatment.
