5 Signs That Your Hair is Thinning

5 Signs That Your Hair is Thinning

Your hair goes through a lot. From heat styling and tight hairstyles to hormone fluctuations and stress, life can take a toll on your strands.

But when does normal hair shedding cross over into hair thinning?

The signs can be subtle at first, but catching them early and working with Dr. Divina Averilla, our hair loss specialist at Love Your Body Medical Spa in Las Vegas, gives you a better chance at keeping your hair healthy, full, and strong.

Here are five signs your hair might be thinning and what you can do about it.

1. Hair is collecting on your brush or in the shower

Daily hair shedding, to the tune of 50-100 strands per day, is normal. However, if you’re constantly cleaning out your brush or noticing a concerning amount of hair accumulating in the drain after every wash, it may be more than typical shedding.

Look for patterns. Is your hair falling from the root? Is the amount increasing over time? One of the noticeable upticks could be a sign that your hair’s growth cycle is off or that your follicles are weakening.

2. Your ponytail feels smaller

This one’s easy to miss, but it’s a big red flag. If your ponytail used to be thick and full, but now feels skinny or limp, you may be losing volume gradually over time. Since thinning can happen slowly, changes like this often go unnoticed until someone points them out or until you need to wrap your hair tie around an extra time.

Track your hair's density by taking a photo of your ponytail once a month. If you see a steady decrease, talk to our team about starting a customized hair restoration plan.

3. Your scalp is starting to peek through

If you’re seeing more scalp in certain areas, especially along your part, temples, or crown, it’s often a sign of diffuse thinning. This typically results from hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or chronic stress.

In women, this often shows up as a widening part. In men, it may start with a receding hairline or thinning at the crown.

A professional scalp analysis can help determine what’s going on. In the meantime, avoid harsh hair products and styles.

4. You’re noticing more breaking or “baby hairs”

Not all thinning is about the roots. Sometimes, your strands are just breaking more easily. If you’ve noticed more frizz, flyaways, or those tiny “baby hairs” that never seem to grow, breakage could be the issue.

Breakage often results from overprocessing (such as excessive use of color or bleach), heat styling, or poor nutrition. While this may not be true hair loss, it still affects the appearance of your hair, making it look thinner and less healthy.

Use gentle, yet strengthening, shampoos and conditioners, and limit heat styling.

5. Your hair feels flat, limp, or less full

Thinning hair doesn’t just fall out — it often loses body and bounce. If your hair used to hold volume easily but now feels limp no matter what you do, your strands may be becoming finer and weaker.

Hormonal shifts (like postpartum or perimenopause), aging, and nutrient deficiencies can all lead to finer hair.

Focus on scalp health and nutrient support. In addition to Dr. Averilla's help, consider working with your primary care provider or a hormone specialist to simultaneously address the underlying causes of hair thinning.

How we can help

We turn to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for fast and reliable hair regrowth. Platelets are some of biology’s most powerful healers and they’re coursing through your veins right now.

To make PRP, we draw a sample of blood and then use a centrifuge to separate the platelets. We inject PRP into your scalp, and the platelets get to work rejuvenating your follicles and stimulating new hair growth.

PRP therapy is safe and effective, and there’s no risk of rejection or complications. You may notice some slight discomfort at the injection site, similar to getting a shot in your doctor’s office.

Hair thinning is incredibly common, and thankfully, it’s also treatable. Whether it’s stress, hormones, or genetics, there are modern solutions that don’t involve wigs or drastic changes. The key is catching the signs early and working with our expert who can tailor a plan just for you.
